File Doesn't Exist[edit]
Thank you for upload svg file. But in this edit w:zh:Special:Diff/79627367 in Chinese wikipedia, the file "File:Spherical_disdyakis_dodecahedron.svg" File Doesn't Exist (See here :w:zh:六角柱&oldid=79627367#大斜方截半變異對稱性 above the text "V4.6.8"), I have changed the svg file back to png file. You have added a file that does not exist, please pay more attention to this, thank you. good luck.-- Nanachi🐰Fruit Tea☕(宇帆·☎️·☘️) 23:52, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
- @A2569875: Thanks for catching that, and for fixing my mistake 🙂 I do try to be careful (which is why I upload these images in sets, which makes it easier to keep track of things) but I will be extra vigilant. ReneeWrites (talk) 00:01, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
About the problem you mentioned[edit]
Don't worry about reporting the problem, I'll open a ticket on Phabricator. What I need from you is to exactly explain to me every step of the process: for example, does the problem occurs at the "release rights" step, or the "describe" step? Does it apply only when you upload more than one file, with different copyright tags, or is it something else? Let me know. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 18:15, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Sannita (WMF): I figured out where the option I was looking for was. It's not gone, it's just hidden in a drop-down menu, I first had to select the option in the wizard that I was uploading someone else's work to get there. Sorry for the false alarm ^^; ReneeWrites (talk) 00:20, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
- No problem at all! Glad you sorted it all out, but anyway, please remember that we're here to help. :) Cheers, Sannita (WMF) (talk) 10:44, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Commons:GlobalReplace[edit]
Hi there, I suggest you use Commons:GlobalReplace to globally replace all files. Thanks. SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 23:42, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- Will do! ReneeWrites (talk) 00:20, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
I got a question[edit]
I saw your latest Flag maps (Like the Flag map of Oryol Oblast), and in not even one day you replaced all the pages that used the PNG version of the Flag map in your (SVG) Version, How is this possible? I need it for my Flag map of Martinique (I am trying to replace the old flag), Let me know. OttavianoUrsu (talk) 19:45, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- (I ended up writing basically a step-by-step guide, so this ended up being a lot longer than I thought, sorry.)
- Hi @OttavianoUrsu: Flag maps (and most other files that see a lot of use across various Wikiprojects) are almost always used as a key image in a template, and if you change the image in the template, it'll automatically change the image on every page it's used on. So usually what I do is look on the global usage page of a particular file and Ctrl+F for template pages (also Wikidata pages, as many Wikiprojects have bots that automatically update articles based on what's on Wikidata).
- The old image you're looking to replace, File:Flag-map of Martinique.svg provides a good example for two common places where that happens. The first is the stub template of the Ukrainian Wikipedia (Шаблон:Martinique-geo-stub) (not used on any other pages currently, but if it was, changing the image there would instantly change it on every page the stub template was placed).
- The other is about 600 talk pages on the French Wikipedia. Taking one as an example, can see the icon being used here: Discussion:Raphaël Élizé - it's very small; the third one from the top. Looking at the page's code you can see the template it's used in - Modèle:Wikiprojet. The final step is finding out where the image gets called, which is fortunately made easy for us because the documentation links the most important sub-pages at the bottom, including this one: Modèle:Wikiprojet/image. If you click on the source code you'll find (after a bit of scrolling) this:
| Martinique = Flag-map of Martinique.svg
- That page is protected, so you'll have to make an edit request on the talk page: Discussion modèle:Wikiprojet. But after that's been done the image will be replaced on all those 600 talk pages. ReneeWrites (talk) 20:26, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- ... and in case of Flag map of Oryol Oblast, this stub template was responsible for the vast majority of the old image's use: Кеп:Orlov-obl-geo-stub.
- I also have access to the Global Replace widget, but that's only useful for images that are used a lot on pages directly, not ones embedded via templates or controlled via Wikidata. ReneeWrites (talk) 20:38, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for explaining everything in great detail! OttavianoUrsu (talk) 14:26, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- You're welcome, glad I could help ^^ ReneeWrites (talk) 16:02, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
