Hmmmm, I'm wondering how to contact Richard001. I'd like to credit you as the photographer for one of your pics that you placed in the public domain. We are going to use it in a textbook. If you would like us to include your name and there is some way you can contact me through wiki-whatever, let me know. If I need to put my email up here let me know that and I will. Thanks, and thanks for the great pics!

Hi. What to do with Category:Wikipedians by country? This is of course not wikipedia, but commons ;-). Lycaon (talk) 12:11, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- That's a good question. I'm not sure really. Some people here are Wikipedians and some are not. Since they are all users here as well I guess we could put it in Category:Users by location too, and maybe each subcategory as a subcat of each country category. It's difficult because now with the unified login Wikimedia projects are becoming closely connected, so many people, myself included, are really 'Wikimedians', participating in several projects. Perhaps it should be changed to 'Wikipedians by location', and given similar treatment to 'Users by location', but each category needs to have a clear description of what it is for. Richard001 (talk) 00:48, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi Richard001,
as you seem not to have re-uploaded a correctly named version of Image:Image Mahuharbour.jpg, I've replaced your speedy-tag by a rename command. That's the easier way (bot done), for next time. --Túrelio (talk) 07:47, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

For commons, I'd crop the caption. But I'd suggest also nominating at the somewhat friendlier (to engravings) waters of en:WP:FPC, where the caption should probably stay in. Commons is multi-lingual, en-wiki isn't =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 10:13, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

For images that are part of a series edit
Hi Richard, just a comment about you "to do" for images that are part of a series. I use in particular for plants, a gallery at the page of the image so that one can see which other photos there are of the same plant. This is also for the situation that I have made an error in the naming of the plant it is clear which other photos should be corrected as well. An example is at Image:Cotoneaster_salicifolius_A.jpg --Wouter (talk) 12:09, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- I wouldn't actually go to the extent of adding all images of a species. In some cases it is possible, but in others there are far too many images to do this. Also, such galleries can quickly become dated if new images are uploaded. I like the idea of using thumbnails though. For a small number of images whose number is fixed, e.g. plates from a book, it seems a good display option. Richard001 (talk) 23:41, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Category questions edit
This is a simple and humble thank you for asking me about the differences in the categories before doing anything with them. It is refreshing and in my opinion a really good approach to use when working with people is the intention.
I still hold onto an idea that the very wrong merge can be unmerged. There was no concensus and so far no individual willing to claim responsibility for it. That is not the reason I am here though.
I am here for the simple thank you. Thank you. -- carol (talk) 09:33, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Olive Thrush edit
Thanks for letting me know, Richard. I'm glad we've got a better one than my blurry effort. I put the one you found in the taxobox instead of that ugly painting. Zimmerman, Turner, and Pearson's Birds of Kenya says nothing about sexual dimorphism. I suspect the difference in underpart color between that photo and mine is because they're different subspecies, sometimes considered different species. —JerryFriedman (talk) 21:59, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
Bird videos edit
There are over 200 in the Bird videos category and I think that it will help of the very large category was sub-divided into subcategories, so I have added a subdirectory for the parrots, and the subcategory is listed on page 2 of the "Bird videos" category. A file should not appear in both the directory and subdirectory, so I have removed the parrots from the Bird videos category, which makes it smaller and easier to view. There is potential for more subdirectories, but I can not easily identify bird families as easily as with the parrots. I have noticed that videos are becoming easier to find and so I think that the "Bird videos" category will need organising before it reaches 1000s. Snowmanradio (talk) 09:18, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think once you get over 200 files it's time to think about subcats. My bird taxonomy is very poor so I wouldn't be the best person to consult on how to subdivide it though; maybe something to ask about at WikiProject Birds. Richard001 (talk) 23:51, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Birds of Xxxx (country) categories edit
Hi Richard - I'm not really sure what the policy is on these, which is why I've not (yet) listed them for deletion. But the two things that are conspicuous, first that the 'well-managed' species (those with a Taxonavigation box and IUCN link, etc.) generally don't have any list of country categories, and second, that the way they have been added is highly haphazard. The logic is to see what it would look like if it were complete; widespread species (e.g. Falco peregrinus) would end up with a list of 100 or more categories appended, and conversely, many tropical countries have bird lists well in excess of a thousand species, so the relevant 'birds of country' category would be unmanageable. The inevitable conclusion is that it isn't a good way of doing things, which is why I tend to remove them when I run across them. Probably it would be a good idea to nominate them for deletion, though two at least (Cat:Birds of Pakistan and Cat:Birds of India) appear to have devotees who would just recreate them. A far better method is to have national species lists on the various wikipedias (which mostly exist already), rather than duplicating effort at commons. Any thoughts yourself? - MPF (talk) 08:57, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

A History of the Birds of New Zealand edit
- I think that I have almost loaded all illustrations, the trouble is that the site where it was published is sometimes very, very slow at loading pages, which makes it a real pain to go through and double check. I have left all the images with the license from that site, rather than PD to save any squabbles over whether these are just mechanical exact replicas of the original work, and because the organisation deserves recognition for not doing what many do with PD images and claim copyright, but instead make them available with a very open license (CC-BY_SA-3.0-NZ) which should be valid almost everywhere.
- I have some trouble with identifying what the modern scientific names of some of the illustrations are, possibly because some are not now considered separate species, it would be great if someone could check that I've given them the right categories. I will probably post a note to en:wikiprojectBirds when I think everything is loaded, and ask them to check.
- I am still looking for a copy of the 1st edition, especially a list of the plates and other illustrations. I may have to make a visit to the national library to look at their copy. The number of images uploaded for that edition is quite small and I've seen variously 32 and 36 being listed for the number of plates. They are hand painted over lithographs and considered works of art. Also I haven't really looked for images from the supplement.
- I want to keep the images of the Plates as is, and make separate files of enhanced/cleaned-up versions for display in other bird articles etc (whereas these ones are most suitable for illustrating articles about the book or Buller etc). There may in fact be higher resolution versions of some plates available elsewhere that suit that purpose as well. :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 00:54, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 00:18, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

question about images edit
Hi, I am looking for images of hares for a book. I found Ethiopian highland hare images you uploaded, with the photographer identified as jkerb.

- Not sure if you received a reply elsewhere but I'll reply for Richard001, just in case. Those images were transferred from Flickr to Commons. They are available under the Creative Commons Attribution license. You are allowed to use the image as long as you follow the requirements of that license. It should be sufficient to cite it as "jtkerb" and then provide a link to his Flickr profile page or the image on his Flickr page. You also need to mention the license. It's courteous to additionally ask jtkerb for his full name and to inform him of your use of his/her image, though this is not required by the license. Thanks for uploading File:Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) dance.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) dance.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
Araripe Manakin edit
Hello, Sir Richard.
I've realized that you uploaded a file, which is a foto of the "Araripe Manakin".
However, unfortunatelly, the pic you uploaded is a foto of a female manakin.
The question is:
I live in the town which is the only home of such bird (Barbalha), and considering the copyright politics of the Wikipedia, I don't have any conditions to upload a foto of the male "Araripe Manakin". That picture would help me a lot in the task of building my hometown's wikipedia article.
So, because of these facts, I decided to ask you about the possibility of you upload that picture. Please, if you could do it, it would be very kind of you.
So, since you simply read this, I thank you.
Sincerely, Arthur A. L. e Silva.
